The Names of Testators in the Cartularium Saxonicum Malmesburiensem

The Cartularium Saxonicum Malmesburiensem is a collection of Latin documents from the 7th-11th centuries. These documents, often royal decrees, are each witnessed by a number of people, whose names are thus recorded. This article explores the names of the witnesses of the pre-Conquest documents. These names are a mix of Latin, Old English, and Biblical. In some cases, the names are recorded in the nominative case; in others, in the genitive. I have converted all of the names to the nominative form, except where this form is uncertain; I have marked these uncertain forms with (g.). Where it exists, I have also provided a standardized Old English form of the name, taken from PASE.

Alas, some of the charters do not have explicit dates; while they are undoubtedly from the same period as the others, I have omitted the names which appear in them since I cannot date them precisely.
